The Ultimate Fighting Championship uses Zixi for entire live fight workflow from contribution to distribution

MMA, and the UFC along with it, have experienced explosive growth in popularity in the past decade. UFC fans have grown to expect any-device, any-time access not just to the fights themselves but to all of the content that surrounds the fights and athletes. To meet this demand, UFC has an objective to stream as much content as possible to fans around the world. The UFC has over 200 distribution partners around the world and its programming is available in 145 territories and countries.

Exploring more efficient ways to distribute video around the world, Ultimate Fighting Championship looked to technology partners Zixi to come up with smart ways to use Internet connectivity and re-imagine video-distribution workflows.

The UFC will produce over 50 six-hour live fight events across the world this year. Today’s “tapeless workflow” is a marked improvement in speed, making video and audio available to editors and partners within 24-36 hours of an event’s conclusion. However, with the ever expanding requirements of second-screen experiences, worldwide sports-news deadlines, and “smart-screen” demands, creative solutions to making live video, audio, and metadata instantly available to a wide variety of users is paramount.

The Takeaway: UFC delivers high quality, realizing high availability, at lower costs

  • Contribution: With various inputs from a broad range of hardware/software encoders and professional-grade cameras, UFC streams flawlessly from anywhere in the world realizing Internet availablity.

  • Distribution: UFC leverages the Zixi platforms UDP-based, video-optimized network aware protocols on standard IP networks to deliver live content around the globe to their content partners (Neulion, XBox, akamai, YouTube, and more).

  • Processing and Workflow: UFC, Zixi, and Levels Beyond have worked to develop a stream to store workflow that enables the UFC to record all live content directly into the Reach Engine from a Zixi Transport Stream.  Zixi, the UFC and All Mobile Video teamed up to provide a way to insert slates and closed captioning into live streams for cloud based end to end content processing and management offering.

  • OTT Content Delivery: the UFC is delivering live Pay Per View events direct to commercial establishments with Zixi enabled set toop boxes deployed for high quality content delivered based on access control managed by Zixi OTT  backend database.
